The Professional Outdoor Sportsmen already knows that the opening day of hunting season isn't the first day of the season.

There's a lot more that goes into a hunt than just waking up on opening day before sunrise and heading out into the woods with a weapon of choice and a gut feeling that you're going to kill that monster trophy of the season.

In defense of our fellow hunters.

Most folks believe that you have to be a fully blown knuckle dragging redneck, that loves to drink beer and chew in order to be a strong hunter. This isn't the case. The successful hunter begins the hunting season by planning months or even a year or two ahead of opening day.

Planning begins with choosing the type of wild game that you intend to kill.

Like we mentioned in our last blog post. Every wild animal has unique patterns of survival and learning these patterns will help you to decide where you should start hunting.

Choosing a location for your hunt really depends on the daily habits of an animal.

Like, where their trails are and other various signs. Feeding habits will give you a pretty good idea of where you should start your scouting. Finding a watering hole with game trails leading in and out of the area is also another good place to start.

Reading the signs.

Take whitetail deer as an example. Whitetail deer will leave behind signature signs that they have been in the area.

Signs like:

  • Tree Rubs

  • Scrapings

Only to mention a few of their many signs.

Once a location for your hunt has been determined you should start doing more recon missions into the area.

Begin by placing a few game trial cameras on heavy traveled trials, around food sources and watering holes. Figure out where your most traffic is coming from before you start placing your tree stands and ground blinds. Otherwise you could be setting yourself up for a huge failure and that would be a waste of all your hard earned money being spent on a license, camo clothing, scent sprays, odor blockers, game calls, arrows, bullets, bows, guns, gun cases, bow cases, backpacks, dog training, ............. you get the point.

Do your homework!

If you've made it this far into the planning phase, then your already half way there.

These are just the pre game warm ups. Now comes the fun part! Get that gun or bow out of the closet and clean that bad boy until it sparkles. Take it to your local gun or bow range and practice, practice, practice. Make it an extension of yourself. Use it until every single step of using it becomes a natural range of motion. Then.......... practice, practice, practice some more.

All this practice will amount to two things.

1. You will know your limits, inside and out with the weapon that you are using.

2. The animal that you are killing will be killed swiftly and will not suffer from a poor shot.

Now that you have a few of the basics under your belt, you can get out there and show'em who's boss!
