Kari’s Heart Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable foundation inspired by our daughter, Kari Schoondyke.

Kari was born on 8-13-2008 with life-threatening congenital heart disease and subsequently underwent open heart surgery at 9 days of age. She returned to the hospital on March 19, 2009 to have her second open heart procedure, from which, she would not recover. We lost Kari at 12:46pm on April 7, 2009 at the tender age of just 7 months.

As a consequence of Kari’s illness, struggles, and tragic passing, our family was led to pass on the love and support we received to others who may be experiencing a healthcare crisis. While in the hospital with Kari, our family soon realized that many other families did not have the financial, social, or informational resources they required while their child was hospitalized for sometimes an extended period of time.

We created Kari’s Heart Foundation, Inc. to lend support to these families with the goal of making an unimaginable situation just a little better. Read more about Kari’s story, watch a video of her short life and find out how you can get involved by browsing our website.

"KARI'S HEART FOUNDATION"

Hello,

My name is Eric Atwell and I am the owner of BVABC.COM / BRISTOL VA BUSH CRAFTING© and this is my

one and only son Alexander. In April of 2014 my wife gave birth to our son. Alexander was born with a

heart defect called (HLHS) Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrom. On the 6th day of his life Alex had his first open heart surgery. This was to be the first of three surgeries that would be needed to save his life.

During his 3 month and 11 day recovery in the PCICU ward in Nashville, TN my family and I lived by his bedside. It was hard for us to travel 6 hours one way back and fourth to stay by his side so we lived with him in the recovery ward during his stay.

As you could imagine this left my wife and I no time to work our jobs. Needless to say, money was very tight.

Kari's Heart Foundation gave my family and I the support that we needed during this time and we could not have stayed with our son had it not have been for their help.

On the 3rd month and 11th day of our son's life, Alexander passed away. Although his life was a short one my family and I owe every moment spent with our son to the caring support that we received from

Kari's Heart Foundation.
